Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategic communications advisor. Mercedes Schlapp faces a challenging job in her role as the White House's strategic communications advisor. She's dealing with an administration that has a president acting as their own director of communications. Schlapp is, however, never lost focus on her role. She works closely with White House political affairs and legislative teams along with policy shops and the wider communications team to ensure that the policies are implemented. Her focus to date has been on topics such as security in schools as well as the opioid epidemic infrastructure, trade as well as other topics. She does not interact much with the media in her job. She did draw a flurry of attention in March after her name was suggested as a potential replacement Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough task in her position as the White House's strategic communications advisor. Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration beset by numerous concerns, which includes a president who is acting as the president's own communications director and Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp is keeping her eyes at the end of the tunnel, working on policy implementation along with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and policy shop in addition to broader communication. So far, Schlapp has focused on school safety issues, addiction infrastructure, trade and drug issues. As a director, she does not have contact with a lot of journalists. But, back in March, her name was floated as a candidate to succeed Hope Hicks at the Communications Director post. The fight has been fierce. Schlapp's ally Tony Sayegh and another candidate for the position, also named Tony, have been fighting in the news. When The Washington Examiner published a negative story about Sayegh, Schlapp stated that she called him to have a heart to heart.
